The merchant teller is used for businesses. Usually they have larger deposits which take longer to count, so a teller is set aside for them. This prevents other customers from having to wait a long time for the teller to finish 1 deposit. Merchant tellers also use down-time to prepare wage and coin break-ups for businesses.

Bank Teller Window

Because merchants usually have their money in special containers that won't fit in the little hole that the normal windows have, so they use the door system that only allows one side to be open at a time. The merchants put their money in, then close the door and the teller takes the money out.

They also have a special line because their transactions usually take longer than the ones you and I make.

It's just for businesses that have an account at the bank. Lots of places, like McDonalds or maybe a gas station bring in locked bags of money to make a deposit. The bank has a special line because these customers can take up a lot of a teller's time. All that change has to be counted. This way, the other lines remain open for us every-day customers so we can get our banking done faster! :)

Some merchant tellers only work with business's. We have one at our bank, mainly it's because a business account will usually only deposit or some other small transaction and are in and out in a hurry.
