Maplestory. Its like an anime RPG thing.
Runescape... its pretty violent and there's lots of rude people...
Silkroad Online seems really fun... I heard its better than World of Warcraft. Plus, its free!
Kingdom of Loathing, although its not a MMORPG is a RPG.
Final Fantasy XI Online sounds fun and I wanna play, but it costs 12 dollars a month and 1 dollar a month per character...
World of Warcraft also seems fun, but it also costs money...

I suggest Flyff and Pirate King Online.
They are both relatively recent 3d-anime styled mmorpg's whose OFFICIAL servers are completely free to play. Forever.
While you can find illegal servers 'for free' for many mmorpg's, you dont get the support, updates, or community that you do on official servers.
and while people may be quick to chime in with Guild Wars, or using timecards or somesuch, these still require purchases. Flyff and Pirate King Online both operate off of cash shops with completely optional items. So you can play one, or both, as little or often as you want... whenever you want, with whoever you want... and never have to pay a dime.
They are also both insanely cute and upbeat.
Maplestory is another free 'MMORPG', but its more akin to Megaman and other sidescrollers then what most people would feel is a MMORPG.

There is a real server, in which you pay for.
And then there are tons of private *coughillegalcough* servers out there for free!
I think you'd really enjoy RO though. It's extremely popular despite it's been out for a while now. I love it and I've been playing on private servers for years!
If RO isn't your style, lots of girls also play Final Fantasy XI...and there are quite a few ones who play WoW too.
But RO is a great one to start with and is easily enjoyable and my favorite ^_^
