In some ways it does.
Your work usually reflects the level of education you have.
How you earn your living determines the money you make so it automatically determines the area you live in,the clothes you wear. The one thing it is not guaranteed to do is define what kind of person you are inside or the pride you have even in a low paying job. That is all up to each person to have pride in whatever your lot is in life.

A lot of people define themselves by what they do. You go through high school and sometimes college all for the purpose of being trained and prepared for a job. How you choose your job probably says a little something about you. It can suggest what paths you took in your education to get to where you are. Other ways you can define yourself might be "I am a mother/father, I am a sister/brother, I am a daughter/son, I am a husband/wife." We are all one of these things. But we are all our careers too "I am an engineer" or "I am a secretary." With a majority of our weekday hours spent at our place of work this is one of the many roles we take on.

It doesn't always have to mean something to us. But often it does. We want to be proud when we say "I am a --" or "I work for --." When we have children we can put our children first. Our home and family lives drive a lot of our emotional importance. But the whole support structure for our lives is based on our working.

Hmm...good question. How does my job define me. Well I work in a bank and I am not my job! I would hope it shows that I am a responsible person and that I care about others. I am in the business of helping others with issues and welcoming them to our business.

We are defined by what we love. If we love what we do, it defines us by giving meaning to our lives and making us feel that we contribute something worth while in our time on this earth.

If it's just a job, then hopefully we have other things that we love to help define us: family, friends, volunteer work, or consuming hobbies.

significance: the Latin word for having meaning or purpose. If you feel that you have that vibe about your job and it truly inspires you. Then you have found your definition, you have a purpose and meaning for that is a part of you as a person.
