We allow certain employees that have shown to be trustworthy and have done quality work in the past to do certain job tasks at home, graphic development, marketing materials development, creative work. Those that seem to need supervision are on field service, they get extra travel time, mileage, expenses depending where they need to go. Bonuses have gone a long way too. We also highlight those employee that gone above and beyond with occasional gifts, concert tickets or gift cards. Also, allowing for extra time-off if its needed.
Those that do poor work and try to take advantage are given the worst job assignments or have a supervisor they are required to report to. They also get passed over for raises and promotions.

My job is not all that challenging, and so there are a few things that my company does to keep employees motivated. We have flex time, which means that we can come in any time between 7am and 10am and then stay for 8 hours. We have a good number of vacation/personal days, and we also have something called "First Fridays," which is held the first Friday of every month and usually includes the company catering either lunch or breakfast for the entire company. We also have casual dress, and it's nice being able to wear jeans and sneakers to work if I so choose. It's a trade-off for the job.

Pay is a strong motivator (though not used at my company). Benefits - health(low cost), dental, vision, tuition reimbursement, pension, 401k. All those things I think motivate you to some degree. I think seeing other employees promoted for doing a good job and succeeding and seeing employees who consistently poor perform getting the sack is also a motivator. Most employees will probably work just enough not to get fired. I think if companies promoted more from within, and really rewarded hard work a larger portion of people would try harder. Just some ideas.

I work for Wal Mart Canada. The company gives us one free day a year where we take off but still paid. Plus let's not forget the profit sharing... I've been with the company four years and the profit sharing is always around 700$. We also have dental and medication inssurance. From bronze to gold. Plus we can invest in the company by bying shares. We also have car inssurance if you want.
