From the vibrations. Its quite common for deaf people to work as piano tuners, the fact that they are deaf makes it easier to tune the piano because the tuning is based on the vibration rather than sound.

with a lot of difficulty. well, they can tune it very easily if they know how, its just whether the sound that comes out is actually like a piano should be or a cat being hit against a wall.

When you don't have all of your senses working, your others are heightened. My piano tuner is blind, like Stevie Wonder blind and I wouldn't trust my piano to anyone else.I would think that each note has it's own pitch and if it's off, it needs adjusting. Just an uneducated guess, I guess.

They probably have some electronic machine that registers the pitch for them.
But I'm sure that it's no substitute for doing it by "ear."
