When buying a house, should a valuation pick up whether there are any faults with the electric supplies etc?

A normal appraisal will not pick up on that. What you would want is a home inspection. The home inspection will go over every possible detail of the home including electrical, plumbing, general construction, roof, slab, windows, etc.
