A small mountain lake.

When visiting the Lake District on honeymoon, we visited Tarn Hows. I asked a local guide why it was called Tarn Hows, as oppsed to a Lake. He explained that a Tarn is a small lake in a mountain. Definately felt like climbing a mountain to get up there!

It's a small lake that remains after a glacier has melted. They are usually found either in mountains or in areas (like northern Ontario, Wisconsin in the US or Scotland) from which contintental glaciers from a previous ice age have retreated.
