If you want to use your laptop outside, I suggest that you get a good router. I recently installed an SMCWBR14-GM router and you would not believe how well it works...

I get a very good signal at almost a quarter-mile away. Plus, I picked it up for only $60.

Wireless routers have a short range, only 40-100 feet. That is shortened for each wall, maybe reaching through 2 or 3 walls.

My laptop is usuable outside by the pool. but we had to move the router closer to tht side of the house first.

As for you moms, you might get another wireless signal there. If they haven't securred their wireless, you could get on and use it. Common courtesy would be to discuss this with their neighbor. Also, many stores, libraries and other businesses offer free wireless that might be available at or close to your mom's. You can drive around and have your pc detect open internet sites.

Another option is to subscribe to full-time internet. You can then have internet everywhere, even while driving the car (very handy!!!).

Wireless routers have enough range to get internet anywhere in your home, but not much farther.

the catch is that normally wi-fi internet is used for the laptop's wireless internt . SO if you are going outside your house , you have to make sure that you have to get the wi-fi signals .... which in turn means that the area should be wi-fi enabled . You have to look out for the wi-fi hubs near the place you ar in ....
