I drive a 2000 SS Camaro. I had a hard time getting the car into and inbetween gears just a few days ago. Now it's not as tough but it's making this grinding noise similar to that of a cat hiss, but lower in pitch. The noise comes only at low speeds, and when I'm slowing to a stop. I'm wondering if this is indicative of clutch failing to disengage. The grinding can be felt as vibration through the stick shift and hear quite audibly.

BTW, I'm quite positive it is not the brakes, b/c it happens even when the brakes are not applied.

Any ideas? If so, what will most likely need to be replaced and what is a typical cost?

Thanks in advance

This is somewhat common with these cars. Check the fluid on the master cylinder. This is probably going to be low. A few of my friends have had these cars and after driving them hard for a while it is a good thing to check out. You can judge how much "clutch" you have left by how far the pedal comes out before you start moving. The further the clutch pedal comes back towards you, the worse it is getting. If you can let the pedal all the way out and you can't feel the clutch engage all the way you will need a new clutch very soon. If you have a heavy foot it could be very soon. A new clutch should be less that $500 depending on where you take the car. Hope this helps.

Could be clutch or pressure plate that causes the problem. On my car it was the pressure plate. Recommend having it checked out. Even the best stick-shift drivers eventually have to replace. I only say that because I know clutch-riders and their cars are in the shop about once a year. Typical costs depends on what is needed. I spent about $400.
