Amazed at how much utter twaddle and miss information and ignorance is being blurted out on this subject.

To answer a few of the ingnorant ones ("why would you want to put it in your car")

Well the truth is Rudolph Diesel invented the diesel engine and the fuel he designed the engine for was???????????????????? Peanut Oil.

So impressed were the french with this invention, when dear Rudolph told them that he was on his way to the UK to display his invention, the french managed to arrange to have him found face down in the engllish channel (no change there then)

The Diesel Fuel most of us use in our diesel cars is a highly noxious mix of some of the most horrible chemicals on earth, designed and manufactured by the oil companies to extrapolate more profits from the motorist.

Vegetable oil, in most diesel engines (not all types are suitable) will make the engine last longer due to the lubricity of the vegetable oil, run quieter, retuirn more miles per gallon and create an exhaust output that smells like cooking doughnuts but also is more environmentally friendly than the smallest, most economical petrol engined car amnufactured.

"It gums up the engine" - complete tosh!, the oil needs to be warmed as it has a higher flash point than diesel, but once heated it will flow through the engine with no problems at all.

As for the tax you pay on using it, well the tax man says you must register with him before starting to use it, you must keep a log of how much you use and you must pay tax on the amount you use.
So if you use 1000 litres a week and tell Mr Taxman that you only used 100 litres then you will have to wrestle with your concience all night long wont you?.

My vehicle has been converted to run on veg oil. the conversion cost £150. It took about two hours to do it myelf. I can now pull up at the supermarket (usually Morrisons) purchase as many 3 litre bottles of sunflower oil as they will let me have, go out to the car park and pour them straight into the tank (get some funny looks though).

If everyone started to use vegetable oil, it would create millions of jobs world wide, the farmers in the uk would not be diversifying into other areas to make ends meet and third world countries would find a new wealth just growing corn or rape seed.

The only people who would lose out are the oil companies, now how sad would that be!.

The effects on global warming would be immediate and immense as there would be almost zero output from the exhaust emmisions of these vehicles and everyone would come to lovee the smell of cooking doughnuts.

Now do you see why governments and oil companies do not want you to know about this subject and give no active encouragement to it's use, they would lose billions in revenue.

Rudolph Diesel would turn in his grave,

No it's not illegal, but you don't want to use it straight because it is very high viscosity, much higher than the #2 diesel oil the pump was designed for. You'll blow a lot of expensive pump components if you run it straight, plus it wil likely carbon up your valves and piston. Try biodiesel instead.

Biodiesel is vegatble oil that has been transesterified to break the glyercine backbone of the fat molecule (which is what veggie oil is, fat). You end up with a fatty acid ester, instead of a big honkin' triglyceride. This lowers the melting point and viscosity considerably.

Oh my goodness... these city-slickers don't know what they're talking about.
No, It's called biodiesel... but don't just go pouring veggie oil into your car! you have to mix it the right way with something else... but in the end it only ends up costing you like 50 cents a gallon rather than the horrible 2.85 a gallon were seing now! and i burns cleaner thus reducing the pollution!!!

Despite all the crank info you received here, it is NOT illegal to use vegetable oil, often refered to as BIO-Diesel. Also, it works quite well.

Myth Busters had a segment on that just a couple of nights ago. Check out Bio-Diesel in your favourite search engine and get an education.

It is illegal to use any fuel on which the road fuel duty (tax) has not been paid.
You can pay the duty to Her Majesty's Customs and Revenue, and make vegetable oil legal. That doesn't mean it is any good for your car, though. Modern high-pressure injection systems don't like it.

yes it is unless u register to use it as u have to pay a tax on it as you are using it as a fuel
easist way to use it is mix it with deisel fuel to about a 1/3 veg oil to 2/3 deisel in winter to maybe 50 /50 in summer or u can get a prossessor plant and convert used oil and distile your own fuel with no conversion to your deisel car needed just remember that your exhaust fumes smell more like a chip shop then haha

No its not illegal but i still wouldn't do it. Petrol engines are a whole other technology and cannot burn veg oil: it will gum them up as surely as if you put diesel into them

It's not illegal if you register with HM Customs FIRST. You have to keep records & pay duty on the amount you use. They will detect it if you get caught in a "dip test" & if you're not doing as required then deep doo-doo follows - as you know, Customs can and will follow you to the hot end of hell if need be!

It may not be too wise, either, depends on your engine.

Not illegal, but it will leave large carbon deposits on your pistons and cause a reduction in power. Your engine was designed to run on diesel and you must use the right fuel.

yes of course its legal, the govt just want you to register with the DVLA that youre using veggie oil... clean oil attracts a 27p tax (per litre) however, dirty reclaimed oil is 3p per litre...

my brother owns a commercial garage, and they have a few customers who already use veggie oil instead of dinosaur diesel...
