I was not married to my sons father who will be 14 in April. His father was paying child support on his own. We had never went to court or anything like that. I have pretty much alway had to call & remind him what time of month it was in order for him to send the check. Well now all of a sudden his phone does not work. I have no way to get a hold him & I have not recieved a check since Dec. I have sent him a cerified letter the beginning of March, figuring that this is what a lawyer would do but I have not gotten anything back from the post office as of yet. I did call a lawyer to see how much a consultation fee was, $150 an hour. What are the steps that they will use to find him? I really can not afford that. And I do not want to be mean & go for every cent that I can. He never helped with clothes, medical any of the extras. I only asked him to help with 2 things in the last 14yrs. Sylvan & his braces. & he could not even pay the for complete half of Sylvan. Right now I am Unemployed

His father does not see him but 1-4 times a yr. I do know that his father needs to take responibility for our son too, but I look at this way I am lucky that he has paid me child support on his own all these yrs where others have not gotten any at all even going through the state. My son has not been deprived at all. He has actually had a better life then I had a growing up with 2 parrents happily married.

I have only been unemployeed for 1 month now. I have been looking at all the job websites for my area.

You might be able to get free legal services.... call the courthouse and see if there is a group in your area. If so, they will review your case and decide whether or not to take it.

sometimes law firms provide free consultations, so you could get one or two for help/information.

If you are unemployed, you can get assistance through the State... they wil want to know information about the father, and believe me, they will try to track him down so he pays child support... etc.

You said "I really don't want to be mean and go for every cent i can"....

we are speaking about your child here, and BOTH parents have an obligation to support the children they create. this is the law. many parents try to avoid their responsibilities. it's not fair to the kids, and it's not mean to expect a parent to live up to their financial responsiblity, since the one in question here obviously doesn't visit your child?

being passive doesn't get us anywhere... believe me... i know! take care of YOU and your child. do what you have to do, whether you think it's greedy or not (it's not !!!)

You can do a simple people search and get his last know address, when he registers his social security number for anything it should tell a new address. You can also go to your local social service office and ask for the assistance. These places are state funded and wont cost you the fees will be added to his child support once it goes thru court and an actual payment arrangement is made if your state does not have an SRS try the CPS office they can usually help too.

Contact your local Attorney General's office. You can fill out the paperwork and they will enforce the child support for you. This will not cost you anything. You will receive your check every month without having to track him down. In most cases they take the child support directly out of his check. Good Luck

You cannot get child support from him until he turns 18 what they will do is give you a welfare type of support or go to the courts if he has a job and ask if his paycheck can be garnished (this does not always work)......go to the courthouse and ask one of the people where you get the child support papers to file and that will be your first step...

on the certified letter there is a tracking number you can look on usps and see if he received it or not. try going to house and see if he is still there. second look on yahoo hotjobs for a job so you can feed yourelves. and then go file for child support at teh county courthouse.
