Increase in carbon dioxide levels (actually the bicarbonate ion, HCO3+) are detected in the blood, which triggers the brain (pons and medulla areas) to increase the rate of respirations, so that you can gid rid of more carbon dioxide per minute. Breathing more quickly has the added benefit of increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood, and removing waste products of glycolysis and fermentation in the muscles.

When you exercise you increase your oxygen debt and produce more carbon dioxide. It is primarily the increase in carbon dioxide that drives ventilation since the body must be kept at a very narrow pH level. Increases in carbon dioxide decreases pH. But increased oxygen demand also plays a major role.

Your body needs more oxygen to metabolize( burn ) the carbs, fat, protein ( fuel ) in your body due to your increasing expenditure of energy ( exercise ).
As you continue to exercise your body( the machine ) will become more efficient and you will not need as much air to do the same activity.
