Shes a great teacher, she stays after school with her students twice a week to help them stay caught up in their regular classes, and to help get them ready for big tests and big projects. I see a big differene in my sons study habbits and how hes understanding his work. she even brings my son home on these days, knowing that im home with no car and 2 toddlers. I think she goes well beyond being a great teacher. how can I let her know how much I appreciate her dedication???

I am a special education teacher for the last 6 years. It is nice just to get a card with heart felt words of thanks. I can not tell you how many times I do not receive anything from parents. Most of the time, I don't even see the parents unless it is at a meeting. I am sure the teacher knows how much you appreciate her. A letter to the principal and superintendent of the district to mention how above and beyond she has gone is great, or a letter to the editor of the newspaper would be nice as well.

A letter to the principal is a great idea or even possibly asking to have a blurb being put in the school newsletter. Also many newspaper, radio and television stations have "Teacher of the Month" and you could nominate her. You could even write a letter to the State teaching board and let them know what a great job she is doing.

Writing a letter to the Principal would be a great idea. THe letter then could be included in the teacher's personnel file, and when the teacher is up for commendation, the letter you wrote would be a good supporting argument for any kind of award they offer to the teachers at your school or district.

Write a letter to the principal and copy the Board of Education letting them know what an outstanding teacher they have.

Give her a gift certificate to a local restaurant that would be appropriate for her to take her husband/children. Enclose the gift certificate in a card with a note about how much you appreciate all she does for your son.

One nice thing you could do is have a dinner ready for her to take with her when she drops your son off one night...a casserole with a salad and some rolls, something easy to re-heat, in containers she doesn't need to worry about trying to return. I know my son's teachers have always appreciated this..be it when I have sent lunch in for them or when I've packed up meals for them to take home for dinner. If you aren't strong on cooking, than you can make a dinner basket with a nice pasta sauce, some uncooked pasta, a bagged salad.

Another nice idea...and one that you can include your son on..is to get an unpainted wooden frame. Have him paint and decorate the frame. On the internet, look up quotes on teaching and teachers. When you find one that you feel really fits the situation, print it out on your computer on some nice cardstock (you can get it in the scrapbooking section of craft stores), playing with the font if you like. Or have your son copy the passage in his own writing. Add a small note of your own and give it to her one day. I have done smaller versions as magnets as well.

DEFINITELY a letter stating the specifics of what she does that is "above and beyond"......give all the details.....send it to the principal and the school board. Give her a copy as well...if she is ever inteviewing or working on her National Board certification, such letters are the BEST! I always like to recieve a gift card to the grocery store or a restaurant from students.

a card with some words of appreciation always works or see if she needs any materials or art stuff to help with the special needs kids...extra paints,crayons,paper,books...stuff like that is always needed especially with schools on tight budgets and im sure she would put it to good use since she is an incredible teacher already...so maybe go with the supplies..im sure she will appreciate and know how much you care for her as a teacher and someone that helps you out tremendously

Find out what you can do to get the school system to start providing funding so this teacher has the help she needs--and obviously isn't getting.

That's what the good special ed teachers need--real support. And that's what they don't get. Nice sounding "thank yous" are worthless without action.

A gift card or a gift certificate to amazon.com would be nice. Our buy her a gasoline gift card to help pay for her gas. Be careful when you tell the schools about her, if you do - she could get into trouble driving your children. So talk about classroom but not the extra stuff.

She may not need anything from you. She will be feeling good that your son is making progress. Just let her know how pleased you are with the improvement he is making. Also ask her how you can support and promote his progress at home. I love the way you and his teacher are working together.
Regards Peter
