Really, it depends on the program you are using.

In any case, you can usually maximize the window by double-clicking its title bar (or click the 2nd button in the group of 3 buttons on the top-right corner).

Depending on the program, though, the document might not fill the screen anymore, so you might have to also adjust the zoom level. There might be a "fit to width" setting; that is the one you want.

While I can't tell for sure it sounds like you may have black borders somewhere on your screen and your video image just doesn't get to the edge of the screen.

This is often caused by a mismatch on the sycn states and refresh rates between computer graphics adapter and monitor.

right click on the screen, select properties, then settings. Try other video resolutions and see if there is any change. If so, you may be able to make adjustments on your monitor to match up sycns or you may wish to consider some local technical help to make the necessary changes with/for you.
