I want a wooden patio set (oak), but am scared that the rain will ruin it. Walmart sells a set I like. I have never had a wooden patio set and am a little worried that I will waste my money if the weather damages it. Does anyone have one and do they recommend it?

I recommend not to buy it. I have a oak bench thing I bought at walmart I treated it with thompson water seal etc but the rain just ate it up it became wood rot and just pretty much fell apart.

Remember, you get what you pay for. Walmart has a history of cutting costs no matter what. The result is usually a nonstandard product developed specifically for them. Not always a good deal.
I have no objections to a wooden patio set, in fact I like them much better than others (metal, plastic). But they do require regular maintenance. By that I mean that the finish needs to be checked for deterioration several times through out the year. If it is starting to deteriorate, refinishing with a quality exterior product (a spar polyurthane, not a waterseal) is the only answer If ignored, the wood will begin to deteriorate and that is the end of the set. (Unless you can rebuild it).

Are you sure it's oak, and not just oak finish? I would not recommend it if it is oak. I find it hard to believe that anyone would build a patio set out of oak. Oak is very succeptible to cracking, and wood is very succeptible to cracking in sunlight. Do the math, oak will crack like mad.
If you want wood patio set, make sure it is solid wood. Veneers will not hold up to moisture or sun. Also, suggest cedar or redwood (if you can afford it). Teak is also a good wood for weather. Regardless, you will need to keep a sunscreen on it, or it will fade, then crack, then fall apart.

i think that you can paint it with some sort of clear, weather-resistant finish and it will do okay. teak weathers the best. it also depends where you live. in southern california, weather isn't a huge issue for patio furniture (especially since it's barely rained this year). but if you live somewhere where it snows or rains more or has generally more extreme weather conditions, oak might not do as well. you can probably ask at the store if there's a warranty on the furniture too.

i would not use a wood patio i had them before and they attract all kinds of bugs and hide under it and it attract termite and the summer sun will ruin it get some patio stone if you want some where to sit and have a bar-B-Q because that's what i did after i took it out and the mosquito's are less of a problem now

first of all wal-mart sells junk! period!
now if you still want wooden patio furniture, put a good exterior finish on it and treat the bottom of the legs, or any portion that contacts the ground, with an epoxy sealer to prevent any moisture from wicking up into the wood. the end grain is the path of least resistance for moisture to enter the wood.

Wooden sets are fine but just be sure to put on at least 2 coats of weather guard to protect it from the weather. It will make youre furbniture last twice as long..... Wal-mart has cheap products so be aware of the quality of your product before you go and spend 200. bucks on something that wont last you very long. I would suggest on buying from somewhere else

If you want wood outdoor furniture it needs to be made from a wood that is weather resistant. Redwood, Cedar and Teak are all good outdoor woods. Oak is not a good choice. If you want outdoor furniture to last, quality construction is very important, you do get what you pay for.

Get the set and then stain it.You will need water proof stain but make sure you get the color you want. Ask the person at HD, lowes or wherever to open the can and you shouldbe able to see it on a similar piece of scrap wood laying around to make sure its what you want

to use This is the best i found made by FLOOD co.you will have to give 2 or 3 coats thefirst time then re treat every year
i use this prouduct when i buld decks.
