when i turn it on it says unmountible boot volum i need to insert the windows xp cd rom but i loost it

Contact Dell and they will sell you a CD for $10-20. You can also get one from Microsoft for about the same price. You will have to already have a serial number as neither of them will supply you with a serial number.

(If you have a serial number, you cn also borrow a CD from a friend to do the reinstall.)

Well, if you lost it then the only way to get a new one is to go to Dell's customer service and ask them for a new one.

But, even then that may not solve the problem as it could be the actual hard drive that has gone bad.

I would take it in to an authorized service center and see what they can do.
