I say that if the earth spun faster or slower we would freeze or burn. Dad wants proof. I cant find much on the web. Help?

Only if the change was really, really drastic. Since the earth's formation, the earth has been slowing down-it's slowed down at least 20 rotations per calendar year in the last 350-400 million years. This was proved by looking at fossils with annual growth rings and seasonal marks. And plenty of things have lived in that time, neither burning or freezing as a whole.

But if it pretty much stopped half of us would get frozen and the other half would get extraordinarily toasty.

If the Earth spun slower, gravity would decrease, sending much of our atmosphere into space. The greenhouse effect would stop and yes, humans would freeze.
If the Earth's rotation sped up, gravity would increase, increasing the pressure on the core and causing volcanic disruption and tsunamis (this would only be a *little* speed up. If it sped up too much all life would be obliterated). These pressures would probably trigger an ice age...
Either way, humanity would be totally screwed. :D

try edhelper.com it is an organization answered by teachers. But from I remember in school the rotation of the earth helps with the gravity. If the earth stopped spinning we would actually have nothing to hold us to the surface. Because the earth core is made of iron. Iron that is melted and constantly moved caused a magnatic force. Thus earth's gravity. I hope this helps.

Propose that the earth spins at the rate of once a year. That means one side of the earth is always facing the the sun. The side facing it fries, the other freezes.

solar input remains the same so the overall would be unchanged. however, a slower rotation speed would make days and nights longer so there would be warmer days and colder nights, a faster speed would yield cooler days and warmer nights.
As for any gravity issues, that is a function of mass not rotation.
