If you choose what your "inevitably" liberal prof tells you, then you are so easily led astray. You really believe Mr. Bush can switch this from a democracy to a republic w/o ANYONE stepping in? bullroar!

Your professor is stretching the point here. The roots of the word Democracy go back way before the French stopped using deodorant....sorry, they never did that...but you get the point. The roots of the word are from the Greek who invented the concept.
But our form of government has never been a democracy. Our government has always been a republic. We elect representatives, who are supposed to vote the will of the people. Some have described our system of government as a representative democracy, but by definition, we are a republic.
I'd call your professor on this.
So much as I'd like to blame the Schrub for this, he's not responsible, the founding fathers are.

Your professor must be pretty dumb. The US has never been a democracy. At least I don't ever remember casting my vote for any of the US laws. Did you cast a vote on the Patriot Act? How did you vote on the Iraq military autorization?
You probably didn't, because the US is a representative republic, not a democracy.
In fact, never in the history of the US have the PEOPLE voted for the president. The president is chosen by the electors of the electoral college. The legislature of each state determines how the electors are selected. I think all states chose their electors based on the votes of the people in that state. The election of senators was not done by the popular vote until the 17th amdenment was ratified in 1913. Before that, the senators were also chosen by state legislatures. Only the house of representatives have been directly elected by the people since the inception of the constitution.

No, that is not correct...
A democracy is "a government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system". There are other similar definitions, but this is what a democracy is.
A republic is "a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them"
Basically, the difference is that a democracy implies a more direct action of the citizens. A town hall meeting where the voters of the town themselves vote on whether articles pass or not is more of a true democracy.
A republic implies that while the people elected the representatives, the representatives then cast the votes on the issues.
Even though we say we are a democracy, in practice we are more like a republic. Hope this clears it up for you.

Lies to commence a conflict (presuming that there have been even any lies) is a a techniques cry diverse than attempting to thoroughly isolate the first public from the innovations being made in Congress. Obama's administration and Congress have reached a thoroughly new point of fascist sort management those previous few weeks/months. On ultimate of all the secrecy is the middle factor that the final public of the first public at present would not choose the diversity of wellness care costs in Congress and yet Congress keeps pushing much extra sturdy and tries to maintain it further and extra hidden from the first public.

The US has always been a democratic republic. A democratic republic simply means that the people elect others to represent them in government. Those representatives are answerable to the electorate. Don't confuse Republican with republican. The Republican is a member of an American political party. A republican is someone who believes in a form of represtative government we call a republic. While all Republicans are generally also republicans not all republicans are Republicans.

The United States is the world's oldest surviving federation. Its government relies on representative democracy through a congressional system under a set of powers specified by its Constitution. However, it is "not a simple representative democracy, but a constitutional republic in which majority rule is tempered by minority rights protected by law." There are three levels of government, consisting of the federal, state, and local levels. Officials at all three levels are either elected by voters in a secret ballot or appointed by other elected officials. Executive and legislative offices are decided by a plurality vote of citizens in their respective districts, with judicial and cabinet-level offices nominated by the Executive branch and approved by the Legislature. In some states, judicial posts are filled by popular election rather than executive appointment

US has ALWAYS been a representative republic. Your professor needs to go back to school. A true democracy would be the people having a direct vote on everything we did in this country. It has NEVER been like that. Your teacher is a really really bad teacher if he or she doesnt even know that.

You should report your professor to the school administration.
It is no wonder we continue to graduate idiots through our school system...they are obviously being taught by idiots!
The United States is a limited Republic founded on tenants of democratic rule.
The governmental model that your 'professor' (and I use the word lightly) seems to be advocating would be a 'plebiscite' or mob rule.
We most certainly DO NOT have that - that's why we send Representatives to congress instead of having mass national referendums .
Are you of college age and still don't understand this?!
Seriously?!

America has been a republic since forever. The liberals were given a chance back in the 60's (I think) but then had many of their own lean away from liberalism creating neo conservatism and stabilized the republican nation.
It's the liberals fault "neocons" exist today.
