this has happened to me twice before. I had been driving the car for a while and it didn't happen until today.

Ok so I'm sitting at a red light. My car just shuts off completely - the engine and everything. I go to turn it back on and it won't - it stalls so I stop trying. I wait 30 seconds and try again and it turns on fine - drives fine.

1) I have had people tell me it could be my engine's idle speed - i know for a fact this is not the case because my engine idles at about 600-700 rpm which is normal for my car.

2) i have had people tell me it could be the battery. Ok but if this were the case wouldn't it not start back up. And how could a battery issue cause your car to shut off - i thought it couldn't only prevent you from turning it on..

now I had turned my radio up pretty loud right before it happened - but this i know is just coincidence because a month ago when it happened i didnt even have a radio in the car let alone turned on.

I had a simular problem; was a check valve in a fuel fliter one time and a bad filter in the gas tank. Both were fuel supply not electrical or idle.

This might help a little. This happens to dodge cars where the vehicle speed sensor goes out when coming to a stop or turning hard enough it stalls instantly. It wont start back up right away and you have to wait about 30 seconds before it will. I don't know much about Mercedes but I would assume that they have one as well. You might want to check this.

your battery isnt the problem.. the battery doesnt make your car run! it may be the alternator... thats what keeps your car running! with a diesel car, it could be a short sparkplug... sometimes the right one goes out causing everything to go out.. i know my my f350 desiel power stroke truck its happened a few times... its not quite as old as your car, and its not by the same people, but the spark plugs is what did the trick for me... if you hear it starting to do it again, give it a little gas.... (put it in neutral) and then give it gas... it'll keep the energy and power to the engine, keeping it from stalling you!

good luck!

Your diagnosis seems to be good . Anyways ... the stalling of the engine of a car could be also due to Your car's carburetter could be blocked by some carbon deposits , try getting your carburetter cleaned . Or it could be due to the blockin of the air filter ...

when that happened to mine the guy who came out to fix it had the cheek to say it was an empty fuel tank! turned out to be the points...some sort of connections in the engine that were loose and needed reconnecting properly

you have a fuel supply problem. check the filters first. then move along to the fuel pump.
