the first thing to do is define marketing as a need-satisfyer. The most important thing that people miss when they come up with their marketing mix is anticipating who the consumer is, if there's a substancial number of target consumers, what they like, and what they want in a product. once you have defined your target market and its needs...
come up with a marketing message. What is your competitive advantage? Why would I buy your product over Dove? Focus on one or two selling points for advertising.
Here are a few ideas for advertising that are the least expensive:
-radio (radio spots are pretty inexpensive)
-the yellow pages (if you're going to advertise here, statistics say that it would be worth the extra money to get at least a half pg. spread)
-samples. Samples are amazingly effective, (mostly because the human conscience works to persuade them to buy your product after they've recieved something-I've read books on this). Hand them out to your friends, co-workers, people on the street
-local newspapers sometimes offer a discount to local businesses for ads
-website/myspace. Having a good website is crucial. Having a product myspace can also help connect you to your target market.
-online banner ads
-sell on ebay
those are just a few ideas. I personally think marketing online could help out trememdously.
good luck!

Marketing is not about products its about perceptions, have a well guided approach as to how are you going to sell your products, are you going to sell them door to door like salespersons do or are you having a shop or a boutique, anyway that is secondary, since it is homebased it is better to first pick up an attribute, Volvo is regarded as the worlds safest machine and BMW as the worlds ultimate drivin machine. So pick up an attribute namely safety or easy to use or any attribute thats not there in the market, You could then send people small pouches as free samples if u have the cash, and then there will be WOM ie word of mouth marketing and Viral marketing, You could also sell it on E-bay but there is a problem ppl will comment sayin "its a dub product" or "i want my money back" so thats negative publicity. You could sell the products yourself or endorse the products by say school teams or college teams once its done..you could then actually serve a community program or a social cause and promote the product, there should be effective public relationship strategy, get the feedback and keep improving you products on a larger plat form, first make it small and keep selling it, Xerox and Samuel Adams and also many companies were in this position itself, so don't worrie a positive approach is all thats needed and also remember no product however good it might be sells by itself, this is where marketing comes into the picture.

The steps you have taken are good . You have to start somewhere. May I suggest online commerce. You create your web page using Front page, however this will be generic static website, You can also invest around $1500 and get a professional website developed by a company you find online , there are thousands to choose from(just shop around). Next go to Google and type in Add Url, this will index your site and it is totally free. Now you need to get traffic to your website, this is the tricky part(the marketing). There is a website called hypedrive.com i know of that does traffic creation for small businesses by using bloggers. You say inexpensive , and i guess what do you consider expensive $500,2000,5000? You need set up budget with website, marketing, material cost labor cost and see what you can do.

Hello there.. there is some good ideas in the other answers but I'll give it a shot anyway. A friend of mine is a Arbonne distributor and very successful at that. Heres what she does and what I started doing in my own home business and mine is not skin care. Anyway... Its all about being PROACTIVE !!! Make things happen... we are in the business of making friends and building relationships. Ever go to a gas station or supermarket? Every see the bulletin boards with other peoples business cards??? wonder why they are really there? Simple.. they need business (a.k.a they need money) She collects those cards and simply calls them or emails them. They are all business people... and have an interest in networking with other business people. Once you get a few interested in what your doing... its time to throw a home party.. get them all there make a few snacks and boom... you got business going on at your house. It seems to work, It's done well for her and now me also. I never thought of that till she told me so maybe its something that might help you. It's cheap/free advertising.. and none of them are cold calls. they all are looking for something better. I know this because my father owns a small business... but his cards are never up anywhere in town. He simply does not need more business. so the ones you see are the ones that are looking for more. good luck.

First, you can give samples of your products to neighbors whom you know can be talked into using them for a while to see if they work or not, because it is really important to have the ability to convince people that you are actually selling something worth trying.
If people accept and start using and give you good comments and/or show good results, then you can ask them or maybe one you trust to help you in marketing your products either through online, or by telling other people about your products. This will help you get your product within the community you live in and will give you more information about your products too.
The person who will help you will be really encouraged if you offer them a commission based on the amount sold by you through them (like a 10% maybe?)....etc.
After you are known, you will be able to use the other ways of advertising or maybe create your own website where it's really direct.
I hope this helps and good luck enterpreneure!

peachy is right -
businesses like yours are entirely dependent on "making friends"...
But be aware that "pyramid marketing" is becoming really unpopular in America... people consider it to be a nuisance.
So keep that in mind and don't be too aggressive.
You need to be an active person who is willing to have the cosmetic version of "tupperware parties" at your home (or someone elses).
Ask a friend if you can give out small goodies at her baby shower... but be careful not to be too forceful about it... the point is the baby - not your products... LOL
Or you can go to an independently owned store and ask if you can pay them a small fee to give demonstrations for an hour or two... some businesses might be ok with that...

Honestly, I would target teens and early twenties regarding acne. So many people have acne issues and people spend TONS of money on those over the counter items.
www.vistaprint.com has free business cards (you just pay shipping) and you could tack up your cards at all local businesses.
