What do you think of hyphenating a first name? I want to name my lil girl after my mom and me. I want both names to be her first name. I don't want her just named after me since we will all get confused.

My 10 year old daughters name is Kaylee-Marie That is her first name and she loves it. Her friends call her Kaylee but at school she goes by Kaylee-Marie. She hated it when she was learning how to write and spell because it was so long but she loves it now. Her name was supposed to be Kaylee with Marie being her middle name but my Grandma was very ill at the time she was born and my daughter was going to be the first great grandchild so I wanted to remember my Grandma and I through in Margaret as a middle name which gave her Kaylee-Marie as a first name. I think its and awesome idea.

Well, i say do whatever it is that you want, as long as the name isn't like 14 letters hyphen 14 letters, you know? That's alot for a baby to learn first off and then eventually, you know we all give our little ones nicknames anyway, so... Well, if that's what you want to do, i say Go For It! That's one of the very few things in this world that we have control over, so make it count! Much Love and God Bless...

I'm not much for hyphenating names, no matter if they're first, middle, or last names. Why not just use your Mom's name as the first name and your name as the middle name? Less confusing IMO. Or vice versa and use another form of your name so it's not quite as confusing.

I really like the names together...they flow well and are very pretty!

If it were me I would have two first names without the hyphen. I think it looks prettier that way. Good luck!

I think it is a nice idea in theory, but you will find that a lot of people will shorten it regardless, unless you make a point yourself of always using her full name, and once she gets to school you will definately find that her friends will abbreviate it.
I have a friend who named her daughter Alexandra, and always used the whole name, never Alex, or Sandra, as soon as she went to school her friends had nicknamed her Lexi, so long as you are prepared for the possibility of others shortening it.
Maybe use your name or your mums name as a middle name instead, or give her an original name of her own with yours and your mums names as middle names.

Depends on the name, and I agree with the person about filling out forms and things. Imagine all the standarized tests that aren't compatible with hyphenated names.

No. In my opinion, there shouldn't be any "puncuation" in your name. Why does it need a hyphen anyway? Alot of people have two first names (I.E. Sarah Jessica Parker). I actually like the idea of having two first names. Or maybe you could make one her middle name.

The name you're referring to seems a bit long to hyphenate, and everyone will probably shorten it anyway, whether you want them to or not. It's a beautiful name though.

Kudos on wanting to honor your mother with naming your daughter after her. Hyphenating a first name is going to be a nuisance. People will call her by the first of the two names, as people are generally lazy. Heck they shorted names like Lisa to Lis.

I don't like the idea of naming a child after the parent, male or female, I find it to be egocentric and confusing for everyone.

My 2cents worth and my 2 points.

Claudia-Elana is much too much of a mouthful. People will definately shorten her name, almost immediately from birth. I am curious as to why you want to name your daughter after yourself? As I said earlier I don't like it when males do it either, I find it confusing and egocentric.

In some cultures it is bad luck to name a child after a living person.

Don't do it. Life is hard enough without inflicting this on your child. Claudia and Elena are both nice but together ... I think not.
