I can rent one for next to nothing and I have had gophers at work all winter long...my front lawn needs leveling; but, perhaps time and the spring rains will do the job. Thanks for you help, in advance.

A lawn roller is used to press seeds into the soil when you have just planted a new lawn. It won't help a lawn that's already there.

A lawn roller is sometimes used to even out bumpy areas. It works best on wet lawns, after a good rain for instance. You run the roller over the lawn to take out small depressions and heaved areas. Compressing the soil can cause thatch over time, so don't overuse the lawn roller.

None. Compacting your lawn will not improve it. It will only compact the soil, which is not good for your lawn. Try adding soil to the shallow spots. Spring is an excellent time to do this, because the new grass that you plant will have all summer to grow.

Rolling lawns is done for appearance. It does not have any positive effect on the lawn itself and has little, if any, negetive effect. It's commonly done by people who have experienced moles, voles, or in your case, gophers.
