You could sing a soothing song for him. Check that, he would probably like more if you hum it.

Try moist heat on the affected area. Get a cervical pillow to help correctly align his neck. If he feels more comfortable on his side he should put a pillow between his legs to keep his hips correctly aligned. If his mattress is old and has dips, get rid of it. It will only aggravate the pain. If he is more comfortable sitting up, it should be in a straight-backed chair that allows him to keep his feet fully on the floor. Give him some OTC pain killers that help with inflammation and muscle relaxation. Muscles tend to tighten up with the pain of a back injury making it hurt even more. Check for chiropractors who will take patients on a payment plan. I had a chiropractor who did that for me. Your boyfriend cannot just let this go. Back injuries can get worse if they are not treated. Sometimes the pain you "suddenly" feel is a sign of your spine having some serious problems. When my back "went out" it was because I had actually misaligned the vertebrae in my neck and it had eventually caused a curve to the side between my shoulders blades. It took two years of treatment to get my back to stop locking up when I became stressed out, usually around the holidays. I did work throughout that whole time, at a job my chiropractor said aggravated the problem, so it took much longer to fix. He wanted me on short term disability. Since I could function, most days, I didn't think I should do that and take money from someone who needed it more. Luckily, my boss had been through a similar problem and didn't give me too much flack on days I couldn't come in or had to be allowed to leave shift early because of the pain. Good Luck!
