I have *founded* a new genre of music to which I think Coldplay should belong:
Suicidal Ideation Rock (SIR) ©. Essentially it is a new genre that combines rocky undertones with depressive overtones.
I also feel that the following bands should belong to this genre:
Keane, Snow Patrol, The Fray etc.

There are many of us out there who think of Prince as a genre of music unto itself. Rock with electric guitars is simply guitar rock. There are numerous genres of rock music. Rock 'n' roll basically started in the 1950's. The Beatles redefined rock 'n' roll in the 1960's, setting the stage for progressive, psychedelic, and punk rock. These paved the way for hard rock and heavy metal. The 1980's was big on guitar rock like Journey, but they don't play like Prince. Prince is and was heavily influenced by funk, soul, and R & B. For the funk, you should check out George Clinton for that (Parliament and Funkadelic).

In the past it would've been called "Alternative Rock."
Now I don't know, but I know I love Coldplay! They're just as good live, too.
