I believe it was Goering whom also said, and I'm paraphrasing, that if respected leaders tell the same outrageous lie often enough, the people will believe it.
Another answerer says both parties use propaganda, however, propaganda is often exaggerated or misleading statements based upon some kernel of truth, whereas disinformation, perfected by the Soviet KGB, is a carefully crafted campaign of falsehoods intended to create a false view of reality.
The disinformation campaign of this Administration is so convincing that most Americans have bought into it (though I never did). This campaign began with the Axis of Evil characterizations. By lumping Iran in with Saddam (bad) and N. Korea (bad), the Administration began indoctrinating the American people into the neocon mindset; that pro-western democracies must replace anti-western govts., by force if necessary. Making matters worse is the sinister hand of Dick Cheney, who uses neocon info. and tactics to further his own agenda; to compel oil rich countries that have nationalized their oil resources to privatize those industries, opening them up to investment and control by the major multinational oil corporations.
Iran is a democracy. Yes, their parliament is overseen by an Islamic Council, but the members of that council are also elected. It's the closest thing the Middle East has to a democracy, and their minor mistakes of withholding info. from the U.N. have been out of fear of the Bush Administration. In reality, Iran has played into the hands of the Admin. Iran has no nukes, they've never attacked another country, and U.N. inspectors have found nothing suspicious or illegal with their atomic energy program.
We are now awaiting an Iraqi Congress vote on a bill to privatize 80% of Iraq's oil fields (SURPRISE!)
The campaign has worked brilliantly. Iraq- evil. WMDs, ties to Al Qaeda.
Iran-evil. WMDs, state sponsors of terrorism.
Palestians- all evil. rock throwing terrorists.
Democrats-evil. Terrorist sympathizers. State sponsored terrorism against the unborn.
Pakistan-good. Pro-western Republic (dictatorship), opposes terrorism (hosting Al Qaeda and the Taliban).
Saudi Arabia-good. Pro-western Republic (dictatorship), opposes terrorism (primary sponsor of all Sunni terrorist groups).

I'm just trying to figure out how that has anything to do with anything. you make it sound like this is the only time this has happened. you must be young because you missed out on the grand witchhunts of the 1950's and the dreaded cold war era. You think that this quote sounds true now you should have seen how many political careers where ended in the 50's and 60's by making the accusation that someone was a communist. Now before you go getting more self rightous on me maybe I should point out that both sides of the isle where making those claims during the cold war and everybody was slinging mud to gain public support. This is refered to as PROPAGANDA. write that one down because it has been used by every government around the world for centuries. So the answer to your question would be NO. there is no relevance between this quote and what is happening just in Iraq, It is everywhere else as well. Next time you listen to ANY political advertisement, of any sort, you will hear this. Look at the Dems. They use the fear tactic to make people go against the Republicans by telling us about all the death and destruction. about how healthcare is being destroyed, about how the economy is suffering, PURE PROPAGANDA. The dems don't have any better solution than the Reps. There is no easy solution to any of this, it's just a matter of what evils you choose to follow.

Read about what hitler did and you'll see the same parallels with america. We have a homeland security (hitler had fatherland security) Hitler was also a compassionate man and the people trusted him to keep them safe to the point of giving up thier freedom. Will america make the same mistake?

Excellent quote, and you know of course, that one of Karl Rove's favorite authors is Machiavelli.
"Therefore it is unnecessary for a prince to have all the good qualities I have enumerated, but it is very necessary to appear to have them...to appear merciful, faithful, humane, religious, upright." -- The Prince
