My votes, in order:

John Entwhistle (the Who)
Stanley Clarke (a Jazz guy)
John Paul Jones (Zeppelin)
Dave Schools (Widespread Panic)

I say the guy from Primus mentioned.. He's a great bassist, too..

Just my opinion..

My personal fav is Jason Newstead. Totally my hero. But I'm also a big fan of the bassist of Breaking Benjamin. That guy's nuts.

Either Flea from Red hot Chilli Peppers or Justin Chancellor from Tool.

Steve Harris is ******* great. I don't know if hes the best, but hes definitely my favourite.

The best is hard to say... Cliff burton is brilliant, and I also like flea quite a lot.

Well, I personally think Chris Squire of Yes set a precedence with his style. Of course, there is always Paul McCartney, Geddy Lee, Noel Redding and the list goes on and on!!!

the best bassist ever was cliff burton of metallica. just listen to "(anesthesia) pulling teeth" off 'kill 'em all'...that'll explain everything. and, cliff died way before his prime, so it could only be left to the imagination how much better he could have been.

jason newstead is a very good bassist, but he couldn't touch cliff.

another one of my favourite bassists is geddy lee of rush. some of his bass from classic rush is just magnificent.

I have to agree with Jen B. Newsted is bad a ss, but if Cliff Burton was still around he'd definitely be #1. Him and the guy from Primus, his bass riffs are unbelievable. I don't know how he does it.

I'm particular to Chris Squires from YES, just listen to jams like "Roundabout", "Long Distance Runaround"...
