My wife doesn't shut our Mac down at night, she just puts it on sleep.

Is this the reason it's running slow?

And is it safe for my computer?

No, sleep doesn't make your Mac run slowly. It's not getting tired like a lifeguard. Repairing permissions also has absolutely nothing to do with speed. If permissions are not correct, some file will not load and that isn't slow, it's not at all. To solve the slow operation issue, you'll need to submit another question to this "forum" and state how much RAM you have, what version of the operating system is running, how much free space is available on the drive, what is attached to the computer and what are the circumstances in which it runs slowly.

And it's nothing to do with it not running Windows. Beware of uninformed Windows users who think Macs are toys. They are hating what they don't understand.

The reason she likes to put it to sleep is because she doesn't like to wait for it to startup and/or she doesn't want to look for the programs she likes to use, just leave 'em running all the time. This is not a problem except for excess electricity use. Be sure she doesn't have the same feeling about the car. It should not be left running while she goes into the post office.

It shouldn't affect your Mac's performance. Try running the Disk Utility and repairing the file permissions. Leaving my Mac mini in sleep mode caused the logic board to go bad on account of multiple power outages. In most cases, I think it would be safe though.

it is completely safe to never shut down a mac. although as time goes on it will start to slow down as it has to bring the computer back to life every time, like a lifegaurd who gets no sleep. thats why mac operating systems have the feature that allows you to set a scheduled time to shutdown you mac. i recommend setting that for once a week to actually shut down. then it should stay running fast. for home use i recommend switching to a pc, i have both by the way, i like both, it's hard to decide which is best, they are both good.

It would start to run slow if you leave it on sleep for too long and will use up more electricity. It would be best to shut it down.

Sometimes it is better to turn it off, I have a laptop and it can be damaging to the battery to leave it on 24/7.

Personally, If your not using it within the next hour, then theres no reason for it to be on.

Yes, it begins to run slower after sleeping. It's good to restart it every few days.

AppleFileServer takes up a lot of CPU when waking up from sleep.

It's safe to leave it on sleep.
