Your method is wrong, because it is missing a preamp or a DI box. You can't just plug it into your computer, 'cause it doesn't work that way.

And, did you get an electric guitar pickup, or an acoustic clip on pickup?

Your best bet is investing some money on a guitar amp that has line level out. Then you can run a cord from the line leve out of your guitar amp into the computer. You could pick up an ok amp for under $200. Even then, you would still have to go into Sounds and Audio Devices to set volume, etc.

Best of luck!

JC is partly correct.

Pity you do NOT have a Mac (like me!).
I'm able to jack right into my computer and start recording with the likes of GarageBand.

Anyway, back to your PC.
A Direct Input (DI) box might help, as a pickup usually needs a pre-amp boost.

But it might be something as simple as you did not go into your computer and switch on or activate some soundcard or input module.

Check ALL the guidelines.
There is bound to be something you forgot to do wihin your PC.
It might even be something as simple as turning on the monitor/speaker volume!

Good luck...and next time, go Mac!
