You have middle class older people

W H A T? You got some of everything girlfriend! And do you think society gives a sh!t? For real.......do you? Please! Don't get it twisted I care! And that is no lie! But if the rich are not concerned they seem to be the ones that are sometimes blocking what could really help others in need. There are donations, and petitions, walks etc to try to help. And I do all of that! But for the ones that don't care, I could seriously just slap the ever non-loving sh!t out of them! Ok time to take my meds!

Quite frankly, Giggly
None of the above.
It would not be fair to generalize about the perceptions of a whole society.
If You gather the perceptions of that age group, You may find that, OUR SOCIETY, devalues the elderly and quite likely, just don't give a ripp.
Unfortunately, the fostering of dignity and preservation of the well being of those less fortunate, is a hallmark of a great society(J.F.K.. et. al. )
I can not sight the numbers but there is no contradiction that the elderly are the largest "group" that live below the" poverty
level".

Most of society believes the elderly to be lower middle class. We (society) believes in the stereotypes of the elderly such as dependency and unable to have a job. We assume that since they are old, that they have all become senile and cannot work. That is obviously untrue. While there are elderly who cannot work, alot of them can and do. All my grandparents (including 2 step grandparents) are 55 and older and they all work, or are capable of working. We, as a society, assume that since they are old they can't have a job, therefore they must be poor.
Defining their financial status is just another stereotype we have fallen into.

I'm 63, my husband is 66. I have noticed that most younger people assume we are rich. We are NOT rich, far, far from it! We barely make it week to week. Still, because we were able to purchase a home, years ago, while housing was low cost compared to today, younger people see our home and just 'know' we must be rich! Then, since I used to import clothing, I have many silk/angora sweaters that I wear daily......since I bought them for nearly nothing......but, it looks as if I am dressing VERY expensively.
Still, most of the younger society thinks of my husband and I as 'getting money from social security'.............getting medical care for less....................thinking we are well off. How sad is the truth, compared to what I am 'told' by younger people. For those who really planned and kept up their planning for these older years, the future CAN be bright. For those of us who (wanted to) needed to help others during our 'planning'........we just could not help the family member AND keep our plan in place. So, we are basically, adrift.
