Peter -
It all depends on how good you are with your hands. Many times we have people call us up and ask that question - we ask them if they are handy around the house.
If you are not handy (or don't want to get too involved), then I'd say to hire a contractor. If you are of the do-it-yourself mindset, then go right ahead and buy a kit to install it.
Most of the stuff will be farmed out anyways - I'm guessing you don't have a backhoe to excavate with, so you'll hire someone to come in for that. Remember legos? Can you line things up properly? Then you won't have a problem assembling the polymer panels of an inground pool...once that is done, you'll call up the concrete truck to come and pour concrete. You can install the poolcrete to form the base of the pool (very simple) and the liner as well (get about three of your friends) - as you easily snap the liner into the wall, you'll be glad that you didn't pay a contractor 20k to install your pool. Then as you fill the pool with water from your hose, you'll call in an electrician and plumber and they'll finish up pretty much everything else.
To recap:
Most people farm out the excavaction, the concrete, the plumbing, and the electrical. You can do everything else if you are handy. Don't listen to the people who say that you can't do it - most of the time after the pool kit is installed, the homeowner calls us back and says they are going to install pools on the side!!
Check us out at http://www.diypools.com and call us up if you have any questions.
Good luck!
Ted

In ground? Yipes! So many things to consider: soil type, stabilizing the sides, forming, concrete pumps, floor slope, drains, coves, ladders, steps, electrical (lights in the walls), plumbing, filtering, pool covers........and of course building inspections. No, I'd hire a pro to do an inground.
Above ground can be done by two people who barely know what they are doing - that is personal experience. They may be white trash pools, but it is all we could afford. I guess I'm white trash.
Inbetween is partially setting an above ground into the ground. Once again it will depend on the soil. Some I wouldn't mess with at all. To hid it you can deck all around.
Even the preformed pools need a crane to get them over the house in may locations

i would not advise you to do your own.
i built an indoor pool at my bosses house and all the work must be excact. we built retaining walls and put in a perfectly flat and level base for the fibre glass pool to sit on. the fibreglass walls came in sections and was just bolted together, so getting it into place wont be a problem.
but as i said the slab must be perfect, because of water pressure pulling against the sides of the pool. also any steps in the pool must have rounded or roman corners for the same reason.
too much work even for professionals, please dont even try it yourself.

Not rocket science to dig a big hole, but if in UK and in your back garden, don't be in a hurry to sell your house. Swimming pools detract from the value.

It costs plenty to place in, plenty to maintain and your abode vendors insurance will flow up because of the criminal accountability of having one. you will possibly desire to have a fence with a lock on it around the pool because of the fact while you're actually not abode, somebody jumps the fence and swims on your pool without your awareness and drowns, you're answerable for it. Yeah they are relaxing yet relatively are not properly surely worth the fee.

its going to depend on several factors. Size, inground or above ground etc.
above ground you can install yourself and you cant build (well anything that will last long term)
in ground you will have lots of work, lots of digging etc and will be easier and cheaper in the long run hirering someone to do it for you if you have never done it before.
