I have a friend that will actually turn off the TV's at airport lobbies and restraunts with a special clicker she bought...

She claims that no one notices but it seems like people seem less distracted and have better attitudes when she does it...

Cool huh?

obviously if someone was like "Hey, what's the big idea?"
Then she would not do it again... she's not rude or anything... just trying to stick up for what goes into her brain all the time...

I personally do not watch tv. So a clicker to turn off a tv in a public place would not bother me in the least. I think too many people waste their brains on mindless programs which will drive the mind to mush. I think better programming or educational programming should be stressed more than the garbage that exists.

We didn't have a TV in our house until I bought one with my own money after graduating from High School!

My parents reared us strict fundies, and I could definitely see the influence it had on our home after I bought it -- because it was such a novelty, we watched too much and we ended up fighting about what to watch!

We have 3 TVs in our home, and our son is not allowed to watch during the week - only on the weekend, so he is not distracted from his school work. Plus, the "no-TV during the week" rule encourages him to go outside and play more after school! We do make concessions in bad weather - he usually would rather play with his PSP or X-box though!

I think removing TV altogether is too radical - we need to stay in touch with news, and some shows (especially those on the learning channels) that bring us together as a family and gives us more to discuss!

Great question!

I don't think that's cool at all. It's one thing to choose not to watch tv yourself, but to force your beliefs on others in a public setting is just wrong. If she personally does not want to watch tv, then she can turn away from the set, or read a book and ignore the television. Is your friend some kind of demented control freak?

Yea i don't care much for TV. Ive noticed that nobody notices the tv when in public places. You have to dedicate your full attention to the tv so whats the point if your in a place where people need your attention.

That is neat that she can do that and nobody pays attention, even the people working there.

I WANT ONE OF THOSE!!!

My hubby and I have a TV set which is not used to watch TV. We have it hooked up to a video tape player and a dvd player, so that's what we use it for.

We decided a while ago that we didn't want television. The only things I really miss is the PBS programming. But we can get any high-quality television series that we want to watch on dvd, and since it's not important to us that we're "up to date' on shows, we're happier not having those awful commericals intrude into our lives.

I don't watch TV, the internet wastes enough of my time. It's just the S.O.S. on tv anyway, unless you have a favorite show you like to watch, then I think tv is great. Watching the news or just clicking it on and flipping channels for hours though...

Yes, that is cool, but only if she doesn't turn off the TV when someone is actually watching it. I suppose those numbskulls have rights, too.

threw it out nearly 15 years ago -
i live in a community where no body has a tv.

over all we've noticed that crime has dropped, teen age preganancy are gone, no drugs AND the childrens grades have all gone up - familes are closer.

children are more creative.

over 1000 familes in our community.

there are many such communities popping up all over america. must be a reason for it.
