I would buy an old teapot from a yard sale that you
like and drill a couple of holes at the bottom for drainage. Then plant some non-stop begonias. These begonias are very large and come in a variety of colors and look like a form of a rose. They continue to bloom the entire summer and are low maintenance.

Unusual Hanging Baskets

You can either decide to go for unusual containers or unusual contents.

You could plant up with strawberries for instance or berrys and i think I have seen tomatoes in a hanging basket too.

As for containers I have seen kitchen colanders used and they look very kitsch. You can get flower pouches and with the right flowers that means that you do not see the container at all.

Years and years ago my Mum got some wine bottles drilled at the bottom and then planted them. We tried to do some last year but struggled to drill the glass, it's better if the bottle has a dimple at the bottom like a champers bottle. They are fiddly to set up but look very funky, however I saw an answer on here on how to drill glass bottles so will be trying again!

Take a look at some gardening websites - like www.bbc.co.uk for inspiration.

I have tried various ideas, bot one of the most successful and attractive was in using an old pair of hikers socks. Don't laugh I'm not joking, I filed them with compost and water retaining crystals then simply poked small holes in them and inserted the young plants. In my case I hang them one above the other on a drainpipe. If you keep the plants close enough together you end up with a display which hides the drain pipe completely. But try your own ideas as well. Old Kettles, look quite good, with a bit of imagination you can use all sorts. Have fun.

You can make a usual hanging basket look unusual by planting cherry tomatoes. They not only look good but taste great!

Try some oriental shrubs; even some of the more common junipers that spread in growth are especially interesting when hung in a basket

as long as you keep them watered all year you can grow any kind of hardy perenials creepers/spreading plants, campanulas, these will flower all summer, snow in summer, these flower late spring and go into summer, sedums with red or yellow flowers, creeping jenny is a good one with yellow flowers, you could put different varieties in and you keep the foliage on these kind of plants.,they don't have to be hanging plants as creepers will hang over the basket anyway as they grow. theres lots, try a few experiments!. good luck.

I saw a great article in easy gardening magazine once where they used old tin cans (baked beans etc..) drilled holes in the bottom for drainage & left them to go rusty then filled them with crocuses and other tiny plants they looked amazing.

I buy kids little dollhouses with a handle on them at yard sales and plant inside of them (most of them open up too).

It looks like little birdhouse with plants coming out, really cute and cheap.
