Don't be in such a rush to push solids.
A 5 week olds digestive system is not ready for it.
Generally "they" say not to start solids for AT LEAST 4 to 6 months (that's 16 to 20 weeks...) 5 weeks is really early.
Talk to your pediatrician and see what they say...my guess is that they will tell you to wait.
The only thing a 5 week old NEEDs to eat ...is breastmilk or formula.

No. Not all babies can wait until the reccommended four to six months. Especially big ones! Mine were 9-9, 9-5, and 8-1. My first ate at three months...she was the eight pounder. My second was 9-9...she was six weeks old when we started cereal. My third was 9-5 and we started him on rice cereal at about eight weeks. Many people have different opinions on this than I do, and will tell you to wait, but you know your baby best. The bigger the baby...the hungrier they are...and the sooner they need food. I think that my babies would have been starving and very unhappy if I waited. If she drinks six to eight ounces every two or three hours and is still hungry try some rice cereal...if that works move onto the oatmeal, then barley...and then the yellow fruits and veges. Good luck, and don't listen to every ones negativeness. Big babies are different.

It is way too early to start her on cereal. Introducing baby food or cereal too early can cause many problems and even food allergies. Most pediatricians recommend starting cereal around 4-5 months old so please check with your doctor before adding anything new to her diet. I have three children and can tell you from my experience that feeding them cereal does not make them feel fuller or help them sleep longer....I wish it did! I know the older generation (our parents) swear by adding cereal to their bottle at earlier ages to help them sleep longer periods of time but most experts agree that it really doesn't work like that. Congrats on your new baby girl!

No, it's way to early to give an infant rice cereal. They shouldn't be getting anything other than mom's milk or formula until they are four or five months old.
Please check with your child's pediatrician for better guidelines. However, I do know that five weeks old is way too soon to give a baby cereal.

Is it too early? Everyone will tell you YES...DO NOT give a 5 week old cereal!
I have 4 children (birth weights from 7.14 thru 8.14) and they all started cereal between 4 and 8 weeks old. (They did not develop allergies, they are not obese, they digested it fine) My oldest was eating roast beef and mashed potatoes and drinking whole milk by 7 months.
Go ahead and give it a try....mix the cereal with formula or breast milk....make it very watery. Only about a tablespoon of cereal the first time.
It doesn't matter how much they weigh, what matters is how much and how many times a day they are eating...there is such a thing as too much formula or breast milk.
Congrats on the baby and good luck!

Weight has nothing to do with giving solid food. It's the gag reflex that matters and their age. Most babies aren't ready for solids until around 4 months old. Their bodies just aren't ready to digest solids yet. If you aren't sure, ask your pediatrician. My doctor said to introduce rice cereal around 4 months followed by oatmeal and barley. But I didn't start either of my kids on cereal until they were 17-18 weeks old. As long as she is gaining weight and seems satisfied, I wouldn't rush to solid food yet.

Yes, if you introduce foods too early it could lead to food allergies. Babies have "leaky" intestines until 4-7 months of age. Until the intestines have "sealed" up solids can cause food allergies. Dr.s recommend 4-6 months as the earliest you should introduce foods. And solids are not a nutritional necessity until they are a year old. Until then all they really, really need is formula or breastmilk.

My baby was almost 10 lbs when she was born too. She's 3 months old now and does not eat cereal. She won't until she's 4 months old. That is when they're suppose to be introduced to it, not before. Their stomachs aren't ready for it yet and I doubt your 5 week old can old her head up for 10 minutes straight yet.
Wait til she's 4 months old. Just b/c she's a bigger baby doesn't mean she needs it to stay full.

My son is 3 months old and has been on rice cereal since he was 3 weeks old. The ped suggested it because he just wasn't satisfied and wanted to eat every 2-2 1/2 hours. and I'd hold out until at least 3 hours, but once he got it, he'd franticly start gulping the bottle down and I'd hear the little bubbles going into his tummy. The ped said he was just a hungry little boy. Ever since we started the cereal, he's been more content and doesn't gulp his bottle anymore. Some babies, in my opinion, just need something to 'stick to their ribs'.
I'd ask your dr first, though. My dr suggested putting 1 tsp in 3 bottles a day.

Yes, it is too soon for cereal. Doesn't matter how much she weighs. Her tummy won't have the enzymes needed to digest anything other than mother's milk or formula until around 6 mos of age. Starting solids (including cereal) earlier than that can put her at an increased risk of allergies, diabetes and obesity.
