Does a degree really not get you anywhere these days? I'm about to get my bachelor's in African American Studies, what type of jobs can I get with that unless i go to grad school or law school?

Some degrees are for getting good jobs, others are only for preparing you for more advanced degrees. You have chosen the latter. I also chose the latter when I was in college. Since I was not well-connected, I ended up settling for a low-wage entry level office job, but things improved quickly after that.

Fortunately, once your foot is in the door a college degree of any type can potentially help you crawl your way to a better job and better pay. Hopefully your degree has enabled you to learn how to learn...that is what can set people apart in the workplace.

You may have to set your expectations low at first, but if you have truly "learned to learn" in your undergraduate studies, you can soon rise to something better.

Well, you just answered your own question. There are bachelor's degrees that are worth something and there are others that aren't worth the paper they are written on. Just how many job opportunities do you think are out there for a degree in African American Studies? The degreed burger flippers are often those that didn't think through the value of the particular degree they went for. Then they are surprised when they can't find a job after they graduate.

Another issue are those that are not willing to go where the jobs are. Using you as an example...there very well may be job openings for someone with your degree somewhere, but I daresay there aren't many at any given location. It may not be where you live now. Many people aren't willing to move...hence the burger flipping.

Honey education is always important and a degree would always look good on you. At this moment I am finishing my Associates in Criminal Justice and I am going for my bachelors. I want to be a police officer and to become a police officer you don't need a degree but don't you think a degree would always look good on your resume??? And remember every time you want to promote to a higher position a degree will always be the key for you to get there. People with degrees who are working in fast food restaurants are sometimes waiting for some types of jobs or those are the only jobs they know how to perform better. But you worry about you and your education nothing else just remember that what you do today will be rewarded tomorrow.

Good luck.

Unfortunately degrees can be meaningless. Most colleges are really screwed up these days anyway. The best bet is to find what you like and work hard on learning all you can about it. This makes your knowledge level very valuable and you can either create your own company or work at one that needs your expertise.

Your degree might help you get a job teaching, but it doesn't sound like it has any real practical use. But if it's what you love the most, then keep at it. Maybe you can write books on what you know.

There's no limit to what you can do if you apply yourself.

A degree can get you places, but who you know gets you into more places.

I have a Master's degree, and I've been unemployed twice. I don't have a full-time job. I have several part-time jobs. Many corporations and business see my degree, and they think I'm overeducated, so they eliminate me from the running for a job.

For the most part, I teach college English, but believe it or not, I'm undereducated according to my boss.

So, I'm stuck with a lot of debt, a great degree, and no real answers to my problems.

I don't regret getting my degree. I just wish people wouldn't let it intimidate them.

I personally think it is a mix of what you know and who you know. It also depends on where you live. Sometimes there just aren't jobs in certain areas and you have to be willing to move to get that dream job. Good Luck.
