I have a white uvpc plastic back door. You lock the door by pushing the handle upwards which thrusts bolts into the door jam. On the inside, you unlock the door by turning a circular knob. Alternatively, the door can normally be unlocked by turning a key. On the outside, the only way the door will normally open is by turning the key.

Problem now is that both the key or the knob will turn but nothing happens! I've tried taking out the screws and removing the plate. This just reveals the key chamber but no obvious way of persuading the bolts to unlock!

Any simple steps I could try before calling in the professionals would be appreciated. I've tried giving the door a gentle knock!

Take the lock apart and try using WD40 or other lube on the lock. You can manually unlock the lock after taking it apart as long as a part has not broke. Then you might need a pro.

Sounds like someone forced it and broke or stripped the lock. If you have the door in the locked position you probably won't be able to open it since you have to get inside the lock through the end of the door by the lock. So the part you can access is only part of the assembly. You may have to call a locksmith.

when you have taken off the know itself, there will be the mechanism inside the hole of the door. try putting a screwdriver(flat head) into the center of the device and turn by hand. this should open the door, if not try sliding a card of something in between the door jam and the door where the knob is at
