There is the Humaine Society and FOAP. Anyone know of others. I used to be a legal secretary and paralegal so I could be helpful in an office situation. Also, I don't mind cleaning cages, feeding, walking, etc. The only thing I can't do right now is foster because I have a very small apt. which I share with my son and we have already adopted a sweet, 4 year old male cat who hasn't had enough time to fully establish his territory. Please advise!

I would suggest that you contact your local volunteer center. They can connect you with specific agencies and volunteer projects that match your interests.

Through my volunteer center, we work with the local cat shelter, therapeutic horse riding, animal adoption agencies, and many other groups. They can likely connect you with some local agencies, and find projects that match up with your skills and talents.

For example, one of the volunteers I worked with at the cat shelter liked it so much that he decided to join their board of directors. So, there's a variety of ways you can make a difference involving causes that are important to you.

Most animal shelters have structured volunteer programs - from getting your hands dirty cleaning cages to walking dogs, socializing cats or desk stuff like lost & found... contact your local shelter and ask! Then decide what fits in your life better. I have done all facets - loved the down n dirty stuff the best as I had more animal interaction, and I recently was involved in breed-specific rescue efforts, too, which is very satisfying.

Where are you located? You stated that you know about the Humane Society, and they would know of other rescues/shelters in your area, so you can ask them. Also, most US counties have some sort of animal services/control operation, and some have associated non-profit volunteer organizations. If you're in a large urban area, there are likely species/breed specific rescues where you can volunteer. Good luck, and thanks for helping the animals!

Contact local breed rescues. You may also want to contact HSUS about the DART team(disaster animal rescue team).
