Authors use literary elements in order to enhance their themes or messages to their readers.

Examples:

Harper Lee uses the mocking bird as a symbol of empathy in her novel, TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD.

Lorainne Hansberry alludes to a line in Langston Hughes's poem, "A Dream Deferred", when titling her timeless play, A RAISIN IN THE SUN. She does this to enhance the struggle for civil rights of her African-American protagonists.

In the fifth line of his poem "If", Rudyard Kipling employs a repeated simile in order to convey the importance of pride and dignity to his audience.

I hope this helps!
