Nearly 300 on Spain; nearly 700 on Japan; some 50 poetry; more novels than I care to think about; 170 Folio edition; 25 on London; about 70 other travel books (not Spain or Japan); about 200 books on theatre; about 50 cookery books. My husband has over 2,500 books on language (mainly English) and slang.
We need a bigger house!!!

I love books, old and new. I've just donated the oldest book I had to a museum, it was dedicated to Queen Victoria and was written by the founder of the Seaman's Mission.
The oldest personal book I have is a book about Roman/Greek mythology that I got for my 6th Christmas. I loved it. I like the story of Pandora's Box best.
I haven't got that many books left. I moved from a large three bedroomed semi detached with a loft to a much smaller two bedroomed bungalow and now I've moved from that bungalow to an even smaller one bedroomed flat. Even so, I have three large bookcases in my bedroom which is jam packed with books and the two units in the sitting room have books on them too.
Mam loved to read and Dad almost thought that books were sacred. Never ... ever .... did you draw in a book. There was war in if he found doodles in a book ... it was unthinkable.
I only buy books from libraries, lots and lots; you can't go wrong at between 10p and 40p each. I don't borrow books from libraries any more; they end up wanting them back eventually. I was a pupil librarian at school and member of the local lending library in Grindon and of course the Central library. Now, I'm known in the central, and two local libraries. When I went to college, I was a fixture for hours after classes and when my sister moved a few doors away from her local library in Strood, I thought I was in Heaven.
Talking of my sister, all the time the children were growing up, they didn't have a television. I loved to visit them, not to see them (sorry if you work out its me) but to get away from the goggle box and to sit reading, they have about 30,000 books. I would collect a huge pile after breakfast and they would just go about their day around me as the pile got smaller.

About 1700 some old some new, collecting them is a great hobby and reading them beats TV any day. The authors range from Jane Austen to the latest like Bernard Cornwall.

I've never counted, but between my hubby and I we have 13 bookcases in our home.
One is devoted to cookbooks, and I have some fine OLD cookbooks which I love.
