They're entirely different pieces; almost opposites.

The Les Paul has solid mohogany body with maple top. It has a set-in neck, and features pretty loud humbuckers. Because of those factors, the sound you get out of it, compared to a Strat, is darker, more mid range, and has more bite to it. The Les Paul works great clean or with high gain. Think Guns and Roses and Slash. That's what Slash mostly plays.

The Strat on the other hand is mostly built with alder. The body is lighter, has less powerful pickups, and has a bolt-on neck. This set up yields more trebly and piercing the Strats are known for. Because of less output the pickups have, the strats have more of cleaner and clearer tone than the LPs. Think Mark Knofper, John Mayer, Eric Clapton, etc.

They are both great guitars, and you really can't say one's better than the other. The best way to find out, is going to your nearest music store, and playing them both through the same amp. Hope it works out for you. Cheers.
