very good question. it is a sign of a sick society.

I said good morning to a stranger, and he basically just scowled at me. WTF?

Good question. I'm gonna give it a star.

Because of fear, pride, paranoia. Fear of standing out in a crowd and seeming different to the "norm". So everyone huddles together conforming to this lowest common denominator "norm", the main characteristic of which is not to speak to or even look at a stranger. Actually this "norm" is not at all normal. Satan is at work, distancing us from each other.

Did you see Borat in the NY subway?

That was just an amplified version of what happens to me every time I come back to Britain from abroad. This has been happening since I first travelled abroad in the 1970s. In some ways it's worse now, but London in particular is less cold and distant than it was since so many foreigners have arrived. Arrive back home with a friend and continue talking to each other in the normal voices you've been used to abroad, and see the discomfort, the horror even, in the people around you because you're not afraid of them overhearing! They soon start to rationalise "These guys are showing off" and then you start to get paranoid like them.

There may be many reasons. As part of the television generation (and now computers, as well), we are spending less time relating to each other and we are a little out of practice.

But the good news is that through forums such as this one, we can create a new form of communication.

I would suggest that you continue to be warm and friendly in public. People may think you are strange...but we are attracted to what is unusual and different.

Fortunately I live in a small town and everyone knows everyone so when we see somebody we know in a store we stop and chit chat. In the country, we are more trusting of people and we just are friendly to everyone. I encourage my kids to at least say hello to anybody they recognize even if they aren't friends with them. A simple smile can go a long way to somebody down and out or lonely.
