Why do you think Snape is still on the side of the Order, or if he is still a Death Eater? Give good reasons to back up your answer.

I just read the Mugglenet.com book, and it has me thoroughly convinced that Snape is still fighting against Voldemort, but that he can never continue openly helping the Order because none of them trust him.

My reasons for this:
1) Dumbledore trusted Snape. Yes, Snape killed Dumbledore. But I don't think he had a choice. The entire time on the tower, Dumbledore was outnumbered and wandless, but he never begged until Snape got there. I think he was reminding Snape (as he reminded Harry on the trip to the cave) that he had to do what he promised to do. (And of course, he couldn't say this openly in front of Death Eaters, the way he could with Harry in the cave.) I think that promise involved killing Dumbledore if necessary.

2) Snape's reaction after killing Dumbledore was the same as Harry's when he had to forcefeed him the potion. Snape was doing what he had to do just as Harry did.

3) If Snape was really for Voldemort, he wouldn't have alerted the Order about Harry going to the ministry. No one would have known that Harry had tried to tell him about Sirius if Harry was dead.

I believe that Snape is not evil. i don't know why. Generally I'm not an optimistic person, but I think that the author meant for Snape to be a positive character. I guess we'll all have to wait a little longer and see.

I am ready to accept that Snape is bad except for 1 argument...

Why did Snape alert the order that Harry was going to the ministry at the end of "Order of the Phoenix"??? If he had kept his mouth shut or pretended not to understand Harry or waited half an hour more... Voldemort would have the prophecy and Harry would be dead!!!

Can anybody explain this? If you can, I will accept that Snape is now evil.

I think it's actually not predictable, because Rowling makes a habit of setting up a situation to lead the reader to predict one thing, only to totally surprise them with another that they'd never thought of. I trust she'll similarly surprise us this time.

On one hand, Snape appears to have killed Dumbledore (I haven't decided whether I think that's going to turn out to have been a trick), but on the other, it is reaffirmed time and time again during the series that Dumbledore's judgment of a person's character is penetratingly correct- if he trusts Snape, he must be seeing something that others miss. Also, because we're aware of the element of surprise, Snape's viciousness actually inclines us to suspect that he'll shock us all in the end by being good. The oath that he takes to protect Malfoy puts us in a similar reverse psychology situation.

If I had to guess, I'd guess he turns out good. For everyone's skepticism about him to have been right while the all-wise Dumbledore was his stooge all those years seems too contrary to Dumbledore's character to accept. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he turned out to be the one who got his hands on the portkey in the cave before Dumbledore and Harry got there.
