Kris: Your answer is helpful but a bit confusing... i just need to know what 23 typed pages would be equivelent to and how to find that out for next time. Like whats the avg number of words per page in a book, etc... thanks! and i know it depends on the font and page size etc..

Okay, if you are using a 'standard 8-1/2" x 11" 'piece of paper' as your 'size' then you should leave a 1" margin at the top, bottom, and both sides of the page. You should put your 'writer's name' on the left hand side of the page, and the page number at the right hand side in a 'header' ...
DO NOT SKIP ANY LINES at the 'top' of the page, but be sure that when you 'type' you are typing in 'double spaced' ... words -blank line -words -blank line ... to the bottom of the page. When your 'novel' is published as a 'book' the 'size' of the page and the size of the font type that is used may VARY according to the publisher and the 'format' of the book ... so if you want a good 'short novel' then it should be AT LEAST 150 pages of 'typing' and if it's a LONG book then it could be as many as 800-1000 pages of 'typing.' You should ALWAYS put 'chapters' in (mark them off by skipping two lines of 'writing' but leaving all of the -blank lines in) and NUMBER THEM if you want them numbered, or give each chapter a NAME or BOTH. When you are 'done' then you have to 'market your manuscript' and to do that you send ONLY COPIES of the "first three chapters" of the book with a 'cover letter' that introduces you and tells 'the story of the book' ... and you have to write that letter ALL ON ONE PAGE in 'type' no smaller than 12point Times New Roman.
You should ALWAYS 'format' your computer to '12 point Times New Roman' when you are 'printing' a submission copy or are sending a 'disk' to the publisher ... but always send a 'duplicate disk' and NOT the 'original' and always send 'hard copy' (printed out pages) too ...
