Definitely a genius

Madmen, a colorful if difficult term to define, don't create great works of art. Poe did. Yes, he was an alcoholic, but that's an addiction, not an organic abnormality that arises from a structural disease of the brain. My definition of madness.

Poe was a genius who wrote poetry and short fiction that is still read by new and devoted readers around the world. He also created the genre called the "detective story."

If there's a madman, it's me. I'm mad about Poe and his work.

He was unpopular, unsuccessful, and had lost virtually everyone of any importance to him. He was certainly deeply depressed which might be equivalent to being "mad" but that is a difficult term to define. His ability to create certainly bordered on genius though, even if he was unappreciated in his own time. Stories like Murder in the Rue Morgue certainly emphasize his creativity and the rational capacity of his thinking. He probably was not a "madman" but his abilities did border on genius. If anything should define Poe, however, it is his deep sadnes and overwhelming depression. Afterall, it was his understanding of mental anguish that allowed him to produce the works he did.

both. I think being a madman made him a genius. Kind of like Albert Einstein.
