Deficiency in technical skills can have various effects that depend on your academic status, whether you are a scholar, an undergrad, a grad, a postgrad, an employee or self-employed. Since technical skills on the personal scope mainly refers to computer skills, this will be the basis of my argument.
Consequences of lack of technical skills for undergrads include the inability to prepare computer-typed reports, run some software assignments or extract some required information from the internet. In these stages, lack of technical skills might just mean a loss of some marks.
More serious consequences appear, however, in postgraduate stages. Lack of the required technical skills nowadays in a society that assumes good technical skills might render a postgraduate student incompetent in his or her research.
As for employees, lack of technical knowledge can make you either unqualified for financially advantageous jobs, or incompetent in your job. It might cause you either to be slow in using the necessary tools of that job, or it will put you under stress, needing to learn how to use the tool and to use the tool in the time provided to only use the tool.
Nowadays, it is highly recommended that you try to spend some of your time improving your technical skills. This will certainly pay you back by improving your qualification to your job or your study.
