Even the lower rung of the Western Conference teams (Denver, Clippers, etc) have similar records to mid-level Eastern Conference teams? In fact several Western Conference teams would make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference?

several contibuting factors..owners,general managers, coaches who are competeing against model teams that are successful year after year...spurs/lakers/jazz/kings
/mavs/suns all these teams have been highly succcessful in the last 10 years...looking at the east pistons/pacers/sixers maybe miami but the rest of the east has been mediocre to say the least..when you have to compete against success you have to study the models and copy what you can...with the loaded east west schedule..the east has to concentrate on beating mediocre teams..coaches arent as open or innovative..do the owners in the east have an owner like cuban that they have to compete against?...when they load the playoffs with the most successful teams..if they do...then the corporations owning those dull teams in the east may have to bow out to interested owners..
and get rid of lousy nba player/coaches like rivers/mitchell/jordan/cheeks/woodson/thomas,
retreads brian hill/bickerstaff..to bring in some fresh new ideas, a different approach/perspective...models for success needed to change the eastern culture..

it has been like this for a while now, but the east has won 2 out of the last 3 championships. im a long time spurs fan (from david robinson on), so im not favoring the east, but it doesnt matter which conference has the most good teams or the better teams, it only matters who wins it all

i get tired of people saying, "how does any team figure they can beat the mavericks" and "no one will beat the suns this year AS USUAL"........haha, these two teams have the best record every year and then crumble in the playoffs. just goes to show you how insignificant the long nba regular season really is. the playoffs are all that matters.

I keep hearing people saying the east is not as good as the west and the east was good in the 90's. Yet the nba champs are from the east. in fact two out of the last three years has been east champs. west teams can rack up all the wins they want during the season. The playoffs are a whole different monster. Shaq coming from the west is all garbage becuase if you remember he started in the east.

I think it's because, when the east was dominating in the mid to late 90's, the west teams were getting all the good draft picks and those players have developed, for example Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant and DIrk Nowitzki. I think in 5 to 10 years or maybe sooner, there will be another shift in power.

I think its because we have real good players. There are also good players for the East, such as Kidd, Iverson, and "Shaq" but basketball is supposed to be a team effort reason why the Lakers have been losing, yeah Kobe is a real good player but he hogs the ball. It's also not about the size of the west. If you think about it there's more states in the west therefore more teams for better players. In the NBA business they can buy players, just like Miami Heat bought Shaq. I guess the East isn't doing its business as well as the west.

It's just a power shift.... Right now the west has the players with the experience and skill that on avg. is just hands-down better than the west..... But the East has been winning the past few Finals which does carry a lot of weight in the long run...

It ebbs and flows. The East used to be the most dominant when MJ was playing. The Pacers couldn't beat the Bulls but were better than many teams in the West. The same happens in football and the AFC has been much better than the NFC in recent years.

Corporate sponsorship. NBA cities in the West are growing faster than those cities in the East. Some cities like Philadelphia and Boston are actually shrinking in population.

Corporations want to be in a market that is growing in money, so they sponsor in more Western cities to reach a bigger market.

Therefore those teams have more money to spend on free agency players and endorsement deals are more lucrative.

The west just plays a more fast paced wide open game. The east is more half court set the offense. It doesn't make the west better especially considering the east won last year's championship.

I believe the same was said last year and the Miami Heat of the EAST! won the NBA Championship.

The west loves to run and they don't play half court ball as well as the east.
