Many women have to work full time, due to the cost of living being so high in many parts of the US.
I would, personally, have gone crazy if I had to stay home all the time with my little "princess". This doesn't mean that I love her any less than a stay-at-home mom, but that I enjoy my career and need the income. Many more American women are single-moms and don't have another income to depend on.
I have found some of the stay at home moms at my church have support groups since they are so overwhelmed...hahaha...
Imagine having a job, a household, and being a mom too...I thank God that I have a good husband that helps around the house and loves to be with his family, and doesn't watch sports or hangout in bars or something.
I would love to have time off for Dr. appts, field trips, and other "fun stuff", but that is why I have vacation and sick time where I work. So I can take off if I need to.

I am a stay-at-home mom. I have a college degree and worked in my profession until my husband and I started our family. Then we decided TOGETHER that I would stay home. It was hard at first because I really missed the luncheons, business meetings and basically having an office to sip coffee, work and feel "important". The transition to wearing oatmeal smeared sweatpants and hearing BARNEY sing all day was a little overwhelming.
After the first couple of years I managed to "find myself" again. I picked up my writing hobby, that I always loved, while the kids took naps or happily played; and now that the kids have started school I have become a freelance writer.
So, I guess you could say that becoming a stay-at-home mom opened up a whole new career for me....one that I enjoy even more than my first one. AND, I'm home when the kiddos get home from school as well as available for all the field trips and whatnot.
The majority of my friends are also stay-at-home moms. Although some work part time jobs or jobs out of their home.

Yes there are only a few stay at home moms in the U.S. Most women work. And if a woman is pregnant they usually have the baby and stay home for a while and then return to work. I am a stay at home mom and ive never been to work. Most people that i know have always returned to work none stay home permanently. If so very few. :)

I've had 4 kids all in their 30s and I was a stay home mom but I still babysit 3 other children to make ends meet. The cost of living is so high that to stay home is really a luxuary alot of women can't simply afford it. To stay at home is a cop out for women that simply don't want to put money back in the pot to help. If your rich stay home if your not get another job millions of women single and married multi-task

I am an American woman and I work in a professional position, although I don't have children. If I had children, I think the circumstances would be different and I might stay home for the first 3 years, at least. Then, I would return to work...

Working women outnumber stay at home mums in the US. However, I believe their are more stay-at-home mums then there are in some other countries, like most of scandinavia, and even Canada, where I live - though I know a fair number here.

Out of American women with children between the ages of 0-6, one third stay at home, one third work part time, and one third work full time. Ofcourse, there are a lot of women with older kids and without kids, and most of them work.
