Depends on where it is. Borax will eliminate the smell of mildew on clothing, in carpets when sprinkled on and allowed to sit and on mattresses as well. If the mildew smell is coming from a bathroom with hard surfaces, you will have to kill it first with something like Bleach or DampRid Mold & Mildew Remover or Tilex Mildew Remover and the smell will go away. If it is on an old book, you have to put it in the sunlight or in the dryer on a rack with low heat to first kill the mildew, Then put it in a carboard box with a plastic container filled with either baking soda or activated charcoal for a few days to get rid of the smell.

Don´t use bleach this only works for a short time but the problem is still there. Use a proprietary fungicide if using on walls, if it´s for clothes expose the garment to the sunlight as the sun kills of the mildew if for dry cleaning garments add lemon juice and salt and treat in the same way

Find the source, if it's coming from the walls you may need to repair the walls, if it's coming from a water leak then fix that. If those have been repaired you may need to replace the damage which is what mildew is going to do.
