we can't compare the legends

I think people shouldn't answer this question in relation to the film versions of the books.

So books-wise I have to agree with many of the above and say Harry Potter because of it's characters and the way the stories have developed over the series. It's very easy to relate to and become close to the characters. You actually care about them.

Lord of the Rings was very long-winded and I found there was an awful lot of text that was superfluous. The characters aren't really given much depth to be honest, it's all "he's a hero, he isn't" and so on. But the overall story was good. The fact that none of the female characters is developed in any way was very off putting too. And although the book was written in the 20th Century it felt as if it had been written in the early 19th century because of Tolkiens style.

The Narnia books are great for little children, but they aren't very logical. Again the characters aren't very well developed, but the imagery is very good. I didn't like the underlying religious allegory though.

So in order of preference:-

Harry Potter series (will be so sad when it ends)
Chronicles of Narnia
Lord of the Rings

Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings were both good. I still have to read Narnia.

The HP books are quicker, more fun reads than the other two.

LOTR is THE original. However, since there have been so many intimidators, you may feel you're read some of what in here before, if you'd read a lot of fantasy. Tolkein's use of language can make it easy to put the books down and turning off the light after just reading three pages, but the story is fantastic.

Narnia is special because I read them as a child and was captivated. I read the other two as an adult and didn't have quite the same feeling.

You can't go wrong with any.

I haven't read the Lord of the Rings, but I like Harry Potter the best. Chronicles of Narnia is also really good though.

Harry Potter, I've read all three series, and Harry Potter is better by far. I grew up reading the Narnia series, read tlotr's back in about 97 but niether of these has grabbed my imagination and made me anticipate the next book as much as Harry Potter. I've recently gotten so obsessive about Horcruxes that I've started re-reading the entire series for the third time in the last four weeks! Help!

The Chronicles of Narnia are my favorite. Lord of the Rings comes in second, but I must be honest, I've only seen the Lord of the Rings movies, I haven't read the books. Harry Potter comes in last, but they're okay. God bless.

Personnally, I find that reading Harry Potter is very enjoyable, more so than Lord of the Rings of the Chronicles of Narnia. Although they are all wonderful books, you connect with the characters in Harry Potter on a higher level, and there are more entertaining subplots going on. The movies of all of these books are all very good, but bookwise I have to go with Harry Potter. It just is so much fun to read, and evokes so many emotions, you can't believe someone can so skillfully manipulate your feelings. JK is a genius, pure and simple, and so are her masterpieces.

I quite like them all but Harry Potter wins hands down for me, I wouldn't have thought so actually because i didn't love the chamber of secrets so i got put off reading them but then i finally got round to reading the prisoner of Azkaban and wow!!! what a totally amazing book. And after that i've been totally hooked ever since.
