i believe you'd become depressed if you never had any mental or emotional stimulation but happiness comes from within, you can be innactive and alone but still be happy,i think happiness comes from having peace of mind and acceptance of your lot in life

Excuse me if I parse this question too much but you would need a working definition for happiness as well one for what constitutes a busy mind. For example an opiate addict is "happy" after scoring and even "happier after using but will be extremely down a few hours later. A person who meditates seeks to quiet the mind in an effort to achieve happiness or enlightenment. Is this the opposite of an active mind? So I would conclude that while some people will feel happy with an active mind the idea that is the 'only' way is fallacious. In addition I can only elaborate on my view, you will have to elaborate on yours.

Everyone has a need for a sense of community. I think one's personal happiness is expounded from the number of meaningful relationships one has within his or her life. If one sits in the cognitive aspects one can wallow in depression, but happiness thrives with activity (physical, emotional, and spiritual). A well-rounded persona is important.

The goal of transcendental meditation is to decrease the activity of the mind and body and increase the activity of the spirit. Many practicitioners report blissfullness.

Staying mentally engaged is critical to development of deductive reasoning and problem solving skills, but some of the dumbest people I know are the happiest.

Yes. If you are idle mentally then all you have time to do is reflect on things. These things in my experience tend to be negative things. Things you wish you had done, hadn't done, things you wished you could change. By exerting our minds, we keep things moving and keep new, hopefully happy thoughts coming in. If we allow ourselves to succumb to a placid mind, then we are (probably)succumbing to a lifetime of depression and regret.

LOL. I love that you say "elaborate on my view". You don't want to hear anyone that disagrees with you?
