Russia got the first lander on the moon, and the first remote controlled vehicle. The US got there the first man who actually walked on the moon.
Any sensible encyclopedia will do.

The Sputnik program was a series of unmanned space missions launched by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s to demonstrate the viability of artificial satellites. The Russian name "Спутник" means literally "traveling companion". The Russian pronunciation is [ˈsputʲnʲɪk] or spoot'-neek with spoot like spoof, but the usual pronunciation in English is /ˈspʊtn. Neil Armstrong was the first human to set foot on the Moon. His first spaceflight was Gemini 8 in 1966, for which he was the command pilot. Well i'm in the USA born and raised so of course i believe it was us. Now i DO remember that Russia was the 1st to have a space capsule successfully launched it was called "Sputnik" ( at least that's what we called it here) Since history is usually written slanted to whatever way your country is leaning, I think it might be hard to find the actual truth. What you might be able to do, is check with other countries and see who THEY say was the 1st. IF, Russia and it's satilite countries from that time, are the only ones who say it was them, then chances are it WASN'T/ Good luck
